Menopausal Women Go Slow

Friday, August 1st, 2008

As we grow older our muscles atrophy and become weaker if not used. This can become very frustrating and lead to serious health consequences as we become clumsier and begin to fall, resulting in broken bones. There has always been interest in this problem, however most of the treatment modality’s have focused on rehabilitation for the older population.

A recent study from the University of Salzburg is examining the effects of different types of exercise regimes for menopausal women, with the goal of developing new strategies for preventing age related muscle deterioration.

The study focused on menopausal women ages 45- 55 years, when muscular atrophy begins. The researchers compared two types of training, hypertrophy resistance training and a “SuperSlow” training technique which has been used with beginners and for rehabilitation. The results where surprising indicating that both methods increase muscle mass at the expense of fat and connective tissue, however the SuperSlow technique seems to have a greater effect.

These findings can be applied to our own training regimes in order to increase muscular hypertrophy, reduce injury and increase the quality of our life.
