Sports drinks may not be the best way to rehydrate after all. A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition concluded that milk is more effective than water or a popular sports drink at replacing the sodium, potassium, and vital salts lost through sweat.
Dr.Susan Shirreffs and a team of researchers at Loughborough University’s School of Sport and Exercise Science concluded that after consuming milk athletes remained rehydrated longer for hours, where as popular sports drinks restored the body’s fluid balance for an hour. The researchers suggested the body retains milk’s combination of sugar, fat, and protein longer than other drinks.
