Preventing Dehydration

The consequence of excessive sweating can lead to such disorders as heat rash, dehydration, heat exhaustion ( the amount of dehydration that reduces the amount of blood circulating, forcing the heart to work harder) and heat stroke.

There are some basic steps that can be taken to prevent such outcomes, the first and most important is to stay well hydrated.

Evaluate your hydration:

  • Weigh yourself each morning when you rise and after your workout, lose of a pound or two is a indicator you may be dehydrated.
  • Measure the volume of urine you are producing, the average is 1 to 1.3 quarts.
  • Check the color of your urine, clear to pale yellow indicates you are hydrated., dark yellow your are dehydrated..

The second step is consuming enough sodium. The importance of sodium has recently been established in a study in the Journal of Applied Physiology. This study showed that sodium supplementation before exercise created a better fluid balance and greater endurance than those who did not take the sodium supplement.
